Darien National Park
It is located at the eastern end of Panama, in the province of Darien, and occupies an area of 597000 ha. It was created in 1980 and named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981.
This area consists of majestic mountain ranges and hills. The most important are the mountains north of Darien, the Pirre and Setule in the southern sector, and Toad and the Cordillera Juradó south. The maximum altitude is 1875 meters.
Here are born extensive and flowing navigable rivers, the largest in the country, as the Tuira (the largest river in the country), the Chucunaque (the longest in the country with 216 meters), the Balsas, Jaque and Sambu.
This park, the largest in Central America, is the most important natural reserve of Panama, and the second richest region in biodiversity, after the Amazon. Comprises different ecosystems, from the beaches and mangroves to the rainforest.
The park has extensive wet and very wet tropical forests. Among the most characteristic species of the site highlights cuipos, guayacanes, bromeliads, orchids, water vine, etc. As for wildlife, there are seven species of endemic mammals like the Darien plowman and the fox four eyes. There are also over 450 species of birds, five of them endemic, like nuquiverde tángara and the beautiful subepalo. Other common species on the site are the harpy eagle, the surly tapir, jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay, ocelot congo red deer, wild pig, American crocodile, alligator, ocelot, spider monkeys, macaws, parrots, tapirs, etc.
Among the places of interest to visit is the Environmental Center and Cana Research Station, where you can watch birds such as peccaries and spider monkeys, as well as the four species of macaws in eastern Panama: the frenticastaña, green the blue and yellow, and red and green.
This reserve is home to the Kuna indigenous groups that inhabit the north of the park, in the towns of Púcuro and Paya, located in the vicinity of the hill Tacarcuna (1895 meters high), the highest point of the park and place of veneration of this ethnicity. Indigenous Embera and Wounaan groups are also available.
